Two lucky JAGS classicists experienced an unforgettable and thought-provoking evening thanks to the generosity of JAGS alumna Caroline MacKenzie (’90). Caroline invited students to help at the book launch of ‘The Missing Thread: A New History of the Ancient World through the Women Who Shaped It’, by the author and classicist Daisy Dunn.
The event, held on the beautiful roof terrace of Carmelite House overlooking the Thames, brought together many figures in the world of classics, including Tom Holland from ‘The Rest Is History' podcast.
Daisy Dunn, hailed by The Observer, as ‘the next Mary Beard’, delivered a speech, which shed light on underappreciated women in the ancient world, including the enigmatic poet Sappho. A Year 12 student reflected on the event,
"This was such a brilliant opportunity, not only for networking with the best classicists and historians, but also for providing thought-provoking and important discussion both during and after the event: the importance of the female perspective when studying classics. I am incredibly grateful to have been able to go to this event!”
We are so grateful to JAGS alumna Caroline MacKenzie for creating this opportunity. If you are interested in supporting in a similar way, we would be delighted to hear from you at alumnae@jags.org.uk.
