Mary Weller (née Capel)

31 October 1947 - 1 November 2019

Mary joined JAGS in 1959 and impressively cycled to school daily from her home in Clapham Common. At school she showed she was a speedy athlete and accomplished pianist. In her A level art course she assisted Miss Hellings with the design of a JAGS tea towel, possibly a novelty in 1966.

Mary was destined to be a primary school teacher and studied at Falmer College, Brighton. Meanwhile in 1971 she married Sam, who had attended Alleyn's, and subsequently joined him on his various postings with Kodak, including a year in USA. They settled in Watford and Bushey, where Mary became a special needs teacher, utilising her artistic and musical skills.

Mary had two sons who inherited her running and cycling powers and both represented Team GB in international duathlon competitions.

The family’s final move was to Cambridge in 2005 and, on retirement, Mary made many contributions to the life of the Wesley Methodist Church, including supporting the elderly lunch club and providing beautiful flower arrangements for the major festivals.

Sadly, following a diagnosis of breast cancer, Mary developed Alzheimer’s disease and died a day after her 72nd birthday. She is survived by Sam, sons Geoff and Colin, and four grandchildren.
