A Level results

Our pupils have achieved an impressive set of results, with 27% of all entries being graded A*, and 71% graded A*- A. More than half of our pupils achieved at least 3 A*s or As.

Amongst the notable successes are the results in the newly reformed Maths A level, with a very impressive 84% of candidates being awarded A* or A. English Pre-U grades were also high with 82% of girls achieving A* or A.

Sally-Anne Huang, Headmistress of James Allen’s Girls’ School said:

I am once again delighted to see the girls at JAGS achieving such excellent results.  As well as the impressive headline figures, there are so many individual success stories here which evidence the commitment and hard work of our pupils and teachers.  I would especially like to pay tribute to our maths department who have taken on the new reformed A level and won convincingly.

Natalie Plant, Head of Mathematics, said:

The maths department are absolutely thrilled with the A Level results for Mathematics and Further Mathematics.  This is our first cohort to study the new linear course and the results are a testament to the incredible hard work of the staff and students; we couldn’t be more delighted!

Leavers will go on to study subjects as diverse as Biotechnology, Economics and Management, Veterinary Science and History at Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. Several pupils will continue their studies abroad at prestigious institutions such as Parsons School of Design in New York.

Pupil case studies

Anisha Mace received a stunning A*A*AA in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics and will be going on to study Economics & Management at the University of Oxford; one of the most competitive courses to get onto in the country. Speaking about her results, Anisha said, ‘I’m really pleased! It wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work of the teachers at JAGS who have been so helpful at every step. I’m so excited to go to Oxford and see what the future holds.’

Another success story is that of Imogen Webb, who received D1 in English and D2 in History Pre-U (both equivalent to distinction) and an A* in Drama. Imogen will be going to the University of Edinburgh to study History. She said, ‘Sixth Form has been the highlight of my school experience. All of my teachers have really helped me to get to this point. I’m really excited to go to Edinburgh and to study History in more depth.’

Sydney Lo also did exceptionally well, with A*A*A*A in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Japanese. She will now study Biotechnology at Imperial College London. Speaking about her results she said, ‘What I’ve learnt from the experience of doing A Levels is that if you’re willing to put in the hard work, it won’t let you down and it will pay off. I’m really looking forward to studying Biotechnology, it’s such an exciting course and I can’t wait to see what I’ll be able to do.’

On achieving a fantastic 4 A*s and gaining her place at the University of Cambridge to study Mathematics, Kathryn Bowers said she was 'delighted.' Kathryn has done incredibly well, as the course is one of the most challenging and stimulating mathematics courses in the country. A keen musician, she looks forward to joining Magdalene College as a Choral Scholar.

Well done to all pupils and we wish you all the very best for the future.

GCSE results

Our pupils also achieved an incredible set of GCSE results in 2019 with 91% of their results being graded 9-7 (equivalent to A*/A). An impressive 47% of all results were graded at 9, the very highest grade achievable.

63% of students achieved nothing less than a Grade 7 (equivalent to A grade), and 30% of the year achieved all 9 or 8 grades. There were 9 students who achieved a Grade 9 in every subject that they sat.

Amongst the notable successes are the results in subjects such as Geography, English, English Literature, Religious Studies, Italian, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Russian and Spanish where at least half of all candidates were awarded a 9.

Headmistress, Sally-Anne Huang said:

I always feel that Year 11 is a tough time with most pupils facing their first public exams and studying a huge range of subjects.  Once again, though, the JAGS girls and teachers have emerged from the trial of GCSEs in triumph. Clearly, this number of top grades is outstanding, but it’s also been a privilege to see this group of girls develop over the years; they are going to make fantastic sixth formers"

Head of Religious Studies, Debbie Lewis, commented, The RS Department is so proud of the hard work all the girls put in to getting really great results. Their huge efforts have been rewarded and our staff team couldn’t be more thrilled. Congratulations! Mazel tov!’

Pupil case studies

Hibah Khan achieved an excellent seven 9s, four 8s and an A* in a Further Maths qualification. She will be studying Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Geography at A level, and she hopes to study Economics at university in the future. Hibah commented,

‘I’m looking forward to the independence in my studies that Sixth Form will give me, and delving further into the subjects that I love. I think the teachers are so supportive, and have been even more so when preparing for GCSEs, but they have been great throughout. They are helpful, offering extra support whenever anyone needed it. That definitely helps people achieve better results, and I’m really thankful for that.’

Beatrice Doherty also did phenomenally well, achieving nine 9s and one 8. She will study Biology, Chemistry, History and French at A level and hopes to read Medicine at university in the future. In preparation for her application, she has undertaken work experience at King’s with a surgeon over the course of the summer, and has found the whole experience fascinating. In speaking about her GCSE results, she commented, ‘All of the teachers were really helpful, and I couldn’t have done it without them. I’m really looking forward to focusing my energy on the subjects I love from September.’

Lana Chesterman achieved a fantastic nine 9s and two 8s, and will now study Biology, Chemistry, Physics and French at A level. Lana commented, 'I worked so hard and I'm really happy it paid off. All of my teachers were so supportive and I'm so excited to start working on the subjects that I really love!'

There's a huge respect here for all subjects and for the specialist staff who teach to such an outstanding level, often above and beyond the curriculum. Congratulations to all of our pupils and their families. As we approach the new academic year, we are filled with confidence and enthusiasm about the opportunities that await.
